Why on earth did we decide to start using a deadly toxin to improve lines and wrinkles?
Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world and has been for many years. But how did it become so popular? What medical conditions is it used to treat? When was it first used? When did it start being used for cosmetic purposes? Is it safe? In this blog I will explore the answers to these questions and more.
The Origins of Botox Treatment
Botox is actually a trade name for botulinum toxin type A. The toxin was first discovered in 1895 by a scientist named Emile Van Ermengem who was studying a bacterium that caused food poisoning when he stumbled upon what would eventually be developed into a powerful medical treatment. It wasn’t until 1978 that Botox treatments were first used on people, when Dr. Alan Scott injected botulinum toxin type A into patients suffering from strabismus (muscle imbalance in the eyes). The results were remarkable, and soon other medical professionals were using Botox to treat a variety of other conditions, including neck spasms, excessive sweating, migraines, severe bladder control problems and facial twitches.
So how did we discover it worked so well on wrinkles?
In 1989, two Canadian ophthalmologists noticed something interesting—patients who had been treated with Botox for their strabismus were also noticing improvement in wrinkles around their eyes. This sparked an interest in using Botox for cosmetic use. Soon after this discovery, Allergan, the makers of Botox®, began marketing the product as a wrinkle-reducing treatment. It quickly became one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures in the world and remains so today.
Is Botox Safe?
Despite its name and origin story involving a toxin, injecting Botox is considered very safe when administered by an experienced healthcare professional as only very small amounts are used during each session. As with any procedure there are always risks involved which is why you need a thorough consultation to discuss your medical history, expectations and post procedure advice.
How can Botox improve your appearance?
Botox is commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles in the upper face. It can also be used in other areas you may not be aware of. It can improve the appearance of the skin on the chin due to the pull of the muscle causing dimpling. It can reduce the turndown at the corner of the mouth. It can slim the face when used to treat and an over active masseter muscle. It can improve the appearance of the mouth and lips and treat a gummy smile. There are so many possibilities on how Botox can help improve your appearance.
